Collected Poems (Wilbur) secondhand,
the type of prize that keeps me coming back,
was exiled from the wanted items’ land
and sent to languish on the clearance rack.
Despite the way it spent its dotage there,
the scribbled notes on nearly every page
implied it tasted days of love and care
in better times before this lonely stage.
While reading through my newest paper friend,
I scrawl my thoughts on what a passage means
and wonder how, with notes from end to end,
this book was tossed away like tattered jeans.
Though sorry, Richard, for your tragic past,
I promise now this love will truly last.
